A shared business folder can contain invoices, drawings, client records or completed project evidence. One careless delete command can disrupt work even when the organisation has good people and familiar software. Delete protection adds a preventive control, but it should begin with a clear threat model.
Start with the failure you want to prevent
Accidental deletion is different from overwriting, corruption, hardware failure and ransomware. A delete-control product should be evaluated specifically on whether the file remains after delete attempts from the tools employees actually use. It should not be described as solving every data-loss scenario.
Choose scope carefully
Protect selected business folders or non-system data drives rather than applying an unexplained rule across the entire computer. Critical Windows locations should remain outside routine product testing. Begin with disposable data, document the chosen scope and confirm that ordinary users can still complete expected work.
Test the normal workflow
Users may need to create, open, edit, save, rename, move and copy files. Each operation should be tested repeatedly with common applications such as Word or Excel. A protection control that blocks deletion but unexpectedly breaks normal saving can create a different operational risk.
Understand copy-out and cross-volume moves
A move to another drive may create a destination copy and then attempt to delete the source. If source deletion is blocked, both copies may remain. Teams should understand this behaviour and verify both locations instead of assuming a move is always atomic.
Keep recovery independent
Delete protection does not create an independent copy. Use tested backups for hardware loss and disaster recovery, and versioning when earlier file states must be restored. Controls, versioning and backup are complementary layers.
